Passivation

Passivation is a chemical process that cleans stainless steel, preparing it for corrosive environments and applications. This process removes any free iron deposits from the steel, preventing rust.

K&L Plating uses several steps to clean, decontaminate, and promote passivation in the stainless steel. Our processes are customized to your specific grade of stainless steel, ensuring an optimal result.

The K&L Plating Advantage

No matter the size of the order, K&L Plating produces reliable outcomes on every order, as all our films and coatings meet rigorous military and ASTM specifications.

The Passivation Process

The first stage in our passivation process is a cleaning cycle, which removes any oils and residues on the steel. Next, the metal undergoes a nitric acid bath, which dissolves iron and other foreign products. The parameters of this bath is customized to the specific type and grade of your stainless steel. This process meets ASTM A967 and ASTM A380 standards.

At K&L Plating, passivated stainless steel can  goes through specific QA assessments to determine the protection ability of the finished product as requested by the customer. In compliance with MIL-STD-753 and ASTM B117 specifications, these tests can include:

  • Water Immersion Test
  • Salt Spray Test
  • Copper Sulfate Test
  • Potassium Ferricyanide-Nitric Acid Test

RoHS-Compliant

All of our plating and coating processes can conform to RoHS standards for environmentally-safer chemicals. If your application requires RoHS or any additional compliance standards in your industry, let us know and we can adjust our process to meet your needs.
